Play65 rating system is based on the formula used in FIBS (First Internet Backgammon Server), the most commonly used rating formula in the online backgammon world. According to FIBS rating system, the number of wins/loses is not the only criterion that determines the player's skill. In Play65, single games and money games are rated similarly (a single game is rated as a 3-points match). However, the rating of the opponent does effect on the player's rating points, so by winning a player who is ranked higher, you will gain more rating points than by winning a player of a lower skill level. For that reason, players with a similar record of wins vs. loses will not necessarily share the same rating points.
Normally, when a new member joins to Play65 backgammon community, he automatically gets the average rating point of 1500. After gaining some experience playing backgammon online, the player's rating point can either decrease or increase. Note that in order to protect the weak players' privacy, rating points lower than 1400 are marked 1400*. Also keep in mind that players with 1800+ rating points can join the "giants' room" and play backgammon online with beneficial rakes on Play65.
